Northern Lights Adventure

Day 1 When you arrive Fairbanks we provide a complimentary ride to your lodge. We host a quick meet-and-greet with your guides in the lobby that night. Bring your camera if you have questions about photographing Northern Lights! The lodge is in a beautiful location, surrounded by snow-covered spruce forests. Day 2 Today after a hearty breakfast at the lodge, we will head to Running Reindeer Ranch where you will get to know the family who raises these gentle creatures, and take a forest walk with them where you can feed them and take photographs. Then come inside for a bit to talk about how they are raised, and have some of Jane's famous cookies and some hot tea or cocoa! After lunch we will head into town and maybe visit an art co-op or the antique automobile museum. Followed by dinner at Lavelle's Bistro for their delicious selection of wine and globally inspired cuisine. Head back to the lodge to rest, and your guide will keep watch for the Aurora and provide wake ups and photo assistance when it happens. Other things to note Reindeer walk has slight inclines and can have snowy conditions. There is a warm and cozy area inside if you decide not to do the walk. Day 3 First we will visit a dog kennel to learn about raising the animals, mushing as a sport, and hopefully meet some cute puppies! Afterwards, we will gear up for a 20-30 minute ride on the sleds through the woods! After lunch we will visit the Morris Thompson Cultural Center where a native guide will walk us through the exhibits and teach us about traditions, arts and history of the people who first lived here. Then we will enjoy a dinner at the famous Pump House restaurant and head back to the lodge for Aurora watching! Other things to note Dog sledding will require getting in and out of the sled and small amount of walking in snowy conditions. Cultural center is indoors. Day 4 After breakfast, visit Frigid Farm - an organic family farm and homestead. Megan and AJ raise their kids here, as well as sheep, chickens and more. Enjoy a light lunch with the family after a tour of their property. Then we head to the ice sculpture museum where you can enjoy the art and have a martini in a carved ice glass at the Aurora bar! Finish up the day with a tour of the geothermal plant and greenhouse, and then a soak in the geothermal hot springs. The outdoor pool is often surrounded by snow, and your hair may even frost over while you are soaking. Enjoy the healing waters, and keep your eyes peeled for Aurora. We enjoy a dinner there, and then drive back to the lodge where we can rest and watch for more Northern Lights. Other things to note Towels provided for hot springs, bring bathing suit and waterproof sandals. Farm visit requires a little walking in snowy conditions as does the geothermal tour. Day 5 After breakfast we visit the Fairbanks Curling Club, where in an exclusive Gondwana activity a local player will teach us the technique and rules of the game. Then we get a chance to try and challenge our fellow travelers. It is so much more fun than you might expect, and they have pushers in case you have trouble bending down. After lunch we visit the University of Alaska's famous Museum of the North, to learn about the natural history, traditions and native arts of the area. See a wooly mammoth skull, antique boats, native clothing and more! Other things to note Curling requires walking on ice (it is textured ice for walking and you will be given grippers). Museum is indoors. Day 6 Breakfast will be served this morning, and early departures will be taken by our transportation partner. Our guide will be available from mid morning to late afternoon for drop offs at the airport, train station or other places in town.

Explore Kincaid Park where the moose hide in plain sight

Did you know there are about 250-1000 moose in the Anchorage bowl depending on the time of year? Your chances are pretty good to see one in Anchorage but if you go to Kincaid park your chances get higher! You may even see one on the drive there. So now you know the secret spot the question then becomes do you want to go it alone or go with a guide? If you want a guide, I’m your gal! My track record to spot moose at Kincaid is about 95%. I’m a moose magnet and you could look up one of my oldie but goodie vids called Twin Baby Moose in Sprinkler on YouTube to prove it to you. This nature walk will be about two hours. It gives us plenty of time to take lots of pictures, oooh and ahhh at the scenery and fresh air, look for moose and other wildlife and also take a stroll on our sandy beach. What fun we will have! Who am I? A wanderer, a magic maker, a woodland creature by nature. My desire is to make new friends doing what I love most…playing in the magic of the forest, with the plants, with the animals, with all things elemental. Let the magic of the forest open your senses. Let the beauty of the moment open your heart. Let the connection to the animals open you to the moment I look forward to meeting you and sharing the beauty of Anchorage with you. Pls message me if you would like to request a different time than on the schedule. Cathy

Hello! I’d like to introduce myself, I am Sam. Our trip would start off with a meet and greet at the Seward train depo. We’ll go over our itinerary, which is a trip up to Exit Glacier. We will load up and take a 20 minute ride up to the trail head of exit glacier. Along our way we will discuss about Seward culture and history. At the trail head snacks and beverages will be provided. Before we hit the trail, a good struck is always good. To visit the glacier, it is only a 15 minute walk on a paved walk way, we’ll make stops along the way. These stops are for the plaques with more information about the glacier and environment. At the glacier everyone can take a break and I’ll discuss the history about Exit glacier and it’s gradual retreat over the years. After some good conversations we’ll start working our way back to the trail head. Stretching is key after a good walk, then back to the train depo to complete our trip. If weather isn’t the greatest we can reschedule for another time.

My off-grid homestead life w/ sled dogs

I will show you my personal Alaskan life at my off the beaten path homestead, just south of Talkeetna. Of course you will meet my Alaskan husky sled dogs. They are a rowdy bunch, but also super friendly and some (Sam and Hayden) even think that 50 - 60 lb is a perfect size to be a lap dog. You will meet each dog individual and learn about sled dogs in general. You will also learn about how the dogs are an integral part of my life and will sit at my kitchen table to see what it takes to live in Alaska year round without having any utility connections (no running water or electricity network hookup). I have setup many systems to still live a relative modern life in summer as well as in winter. You will learn about how me and the dogs collect our own water, haul our own firewood and building material, and how I grow, ferment, bake and gather 80% of my own food. Besides helping me with these tasks the dogs also provide me with winter transportation to explore the incredible back-country of Alaska in winter. It is a unique opportunity to see how and why we live here in the far north. Come visit me and my dogs. Note: * Guests have to be interested in working dogs and off-grid living. * I have no running water and sport an outhouse. No smoking, no animals of any kind. * This is not a large scale tourist destination, but my real life.

Medicinals and Edibles of the Boreal Forest- A Guided Forage

Experience the iconic Alaskan boreal forest in a way you never imagined! In this guided forage we’ll be winding through our private nature trails, observing, smelling, feeling, TASTING!, and learning all about this unique ecosystem and it’s edible and medicinal treasures. Here’s a little bit of what you’ll encounter, depending on the season: Witness the highly medicinal chaga mushroom (Inonotus obliquus) emerging from a slowly dying birch tree (Betula neoalaskana). Feel what it’s like to walk on a carpet of native trailing raspberry (Rubus Parvifolius) and taste it’s juicy red fruits. See how Devil’s Club (aka Alaskan ginseng; Oplopanax horridus), is every bit as intimidating as its name would suggest, but is actually edible and has a wide range of medicinal characteristics. Taste the sweet astringency of plump black currants (Ribes hudsonianum) or the delicate floral notes of the ubiquitous wild rose (Rosa acicularis). Hear the soft music of the trembling aspen (Populus tremuloides) and smell the tell-tale spring fragrance of the balsam poplar (Populus balsamifera) buds. Sample the fresh spring shoots of twisted stalk (Streptopus amplexifolius) or it’s “watermelon berries” later in the summer. The iconic Alaskan fireweed (Chamaenerion angustifolium) is sure to delight the senses, and lets us know that winter is only 6 weeks away!

Brie's Botanical Garden Tours

The walking tour will start with a brief wildlife safety talk. Please note that bears can be in the area, both inside and outside the fenced area. Next, I will highlight the entry beds and we will work our way up to the front gate. Once inside the fence and plaza area we will stop to talk about the history of ABG including dedicated volunteers and staff that helped transform ABG over the last 34 years. We will follow the half mile paved loop around to the several perennial gardens, research plot and outdoor classroom. The tour will end with the newest addition, the greenhouse, then we will exit through the nursery & gift shop. Please note that the season and weather will ultimately determine the plants that we see. April-mid May can be early for some plants and the gardens might be muddy and or slushy. Peonies are usually in full bloom from mid June to mid July. Mid September might be a little late for some plants, it can be rainy and cool. Tours in Spring, Summer & Fall will cover the history of the garden, identify available plants, wildlife, trees and also general local information. You will leave with new found knowledge about some of the hardy plants in Alaska. All guests will be required to follow any addition regulations from ABG at the time of your tour. All tours are subject to operating hours of the Alaska Botanical Garden and may be canceled with limited notice.

Forage and feast on wild pesto in beautiful forest

You’ll jump into foraging Alaska’s stash of vitamin rich plants often mistaken for useless weeds. We’ll seek-out seasonal flowers, berries, greens, and other plants used in traditional Native Alaskan foods and medicine. In early June we’ll forage for spruce tips and Arctic rose blossoms. We’ll also gather dandelions, clovers, miners lettuce or lambs quarter, plantains, and chickweed for our pesto. We'll meet at the big white barn, by the picnic tables. First off, we'll go over the seasonal plants. Then, we'll stroll along foraging plants and chatting. I love to answer your questions from plants to survival skills and most everything in between. We’ll conclude back at the picnic table for the final segment- cooking and snacking on wild Alaskan plants. We’ll start by making a pesto from our foraged plants. Then, have a tasting-picnic of pesto, Alaskan-wild jam, fresh bread, and herbal iced tea made from foraged plants. You’ll leave with a fresh knowledge of wild edibles and an appreciation of how native Alaskans survived here for generations. You may even develop a passion for foraging! *We’ll walk on dirt trails- no high heels please. *Dogs are welcome. They must be on leash at all times. ** For everyone’s safety, the tour will be canceled if the air quality index is unhealthy (130+ AQI) due to forest fires.

Alaskan Wilderness Dogsled Adventure

We offer customized trips give you an authentic Alaskan experience that you will can't find in town. We take only groups of two people at a time, and when you're here we cater to exactly what you want to do to make your Alaska dreams come true. It’s important to contact and have a conversation so we can setnup your trip. Activities may include: dog mushing, ice fishing, snowshoeing, aurora viewing, primitive skills, fire-making, wild edibles, chopping wood and ice for water and more. We’ll arrange for a cab to pick you up from your Fairbanks lodging and bring you to our trailhead. We’ll teach you the basics of mushing and caring for dogs and then mush the dogs 1-2 hours into our homestead. Arrive at the homestead in time for a home-cooked lunch featuring Alaskan foods. We’ll show you the basics of your cabin- the sunlodge. Depending on conditions and your interests you can then either do a guided snowshoe hike to a scenic overlook or go ice fishing. If you choose snowshoeing, the traditional means of foot travel in the north, we'll begin with a discussion of different shapes and methods. Strap on those snowshoes for a 1-2 hour hike to the top of the Ampitheater bluffs. On a clear day, this is a dramatic overlook of the river and a good place to view the Alaska Range and Denali in the distance. On any day, it’s a fun and moderately challenging hike and a good way to warm up to the day and learn about snowshoeing. If you choose ice fishing we depart on foot for a ½ mile hike to the eddy where we like to ice fish. We’ll chop and drill a hole in the river ice and set a baited hook to catch burbot. We’ll cover the hole with spruce boughs and snow to insulate it for the night. After the afternoon activity we will walk you over to your cabin, the Sunlodge, and give you a brief orientation and then give you a few hours to settle in. Spend the sunset hours taking photos, starting a craft project like carving a spoon, or curling up with a book. Walk back to our cabin for dinner from 7-8:30. After dinner your time is yours- you can play games in your cabin, relax, and weather permitting view the aurora borealis. Other things to note: This is a fairly rugged, outdoor experience and activities are dependent on weather and conditions. Please contact Jenna at [email protected] to discuss whether this is an appropriate trip for you :) Day 2 Hike to our cabin for a hot breakfast. More dogsledding is available if you want- we'll take the dogs exploring a different route on the river and up tributaries. At a pretty and sheltered spot, we will stop and build a little fire for a winter picnic lunch. We have many options and you are welcome to try your hand at driving the front sled today if everyone is comfortable. Snowshoeing, ice fishing, and crafts are also available, time permitting this day. Dinner again in our cabin and a lighted luminary walk for dessert. Day 3 We are both instructors and love to teach primitive and wilderness skills. We can do a mini-course in a subject of your interest including: friction fires, animal tracking, spoon carving, shelter building, wild edibles, tool use, trapping, and more. Spend the morning doing one of these activities or one last snowshoe. We'll mush the dogs back to meet your taxi back to town, you should be back to Fairbanks in time for dinner and a showe

This is hike is 3 miles round trip and crosses uneven, moderately steep terrain. We will point out wildflowers, trees, and animals on our walk up to the top of the ridge, where vast panoramic views of the Chatanika River Valley and the White Mountains await. We will sit on top of the ridge and enjoy a hot drink, home-baked treat, and the company of your sled dog partner before we descend down through the cranberry bushes and ferns back to the kennel. On this tour you will have the opportunity to learn about Siberian Huskies, the natural history of Alaska, sled dogs, the Iditarod Sled Dog Race (Lisbet is a 3-time finisher), and off-grid living. This tour is 2-3 hours total, from arrival to departure. Other things to note: Bring hiking shoes, light jacket in case of wind/rain, water bottle, sunscreen, and sunglasses. Be prepared to walk up and downhill on uneven terrain. *Contact us to request dates not on the calendar.*
